I’m Alex, and I’m a toy photographer, during my spare time, based in the UK. I’m completely self-taught behind the lens and am constantly trying to improve my photography skills.
I began a couple of years ago by shooting Lego, and from there I discovered a whole toy photography community on Instagram which led me to photograph more realistic 1/12th and 1/6th scale figures. My original Lego account was called ‘@Beardy_Giant’ because every name I tried to use when starting the account had been taken so I got frustrated and tried a literal description of myself, I’m 6 foot 8 inches tall and have a beard so there we go! It just kinda stuck after that so when I opened my new account I named it ‘@bg_toyart’.
I am a full-time graphic designer by day with lots of years experience using Adobe Photoshop. This means I’m able to utilize that experience to my advantage when editing my photos. My style involves compositing my figures seamlessly into new environments using a variety of methods and FX. My ultimate goal is to try and trick people into thinking they are looking at a real character as opposed to a plastic toy.
My greatest achievement so far has been being contacted by Hot Toys to become one of their official Photo Bloggers. They produce some the best 1/6th scale collectible figures I’ve ever seen. From time to time they send me their new products to shoot which is a fantastic privilege for me.
