Amy Ayanda’s Brand New EP ‘Ab Ovo’.
Amy Ayanda is a multimedia artist from Cape Town, South Africa. Having been interested in music from a young age, Amy developed a love for singing and drama, culminating in a degree from the Michaelis School of Fine Art majoring in painting. Ayanda played piano and guitar recreationally from High School through her time as a undergrad culminating in a unique sound, best described as a lush tapestry of organic and electronic elements, topped off with her honest, raw and beautiful voice.
Amy Ayanda released the first single off of the EP on Monday the 23rd Oct called, ‘Mama’ featuring Push Push. Inspired by Sylvan Esso’s “Hey Mami”, Mama was written and composed as a push-back to the men who attempt to exercise control over women’s bodies, with their words and gaze. Amy Ayanda, joined by Push Push, echo some of the phrases that are directed at them in public spaces on a daily basis in order to drain them of their power. The production is built around this message as well, employing a frenetic percussive drive, leading to a climax that cracks the song open and allows for a cathartic release of tension that hints at the possibility of a different kind of future. One where women’s bodies are theirs and theirs alone.
